"Native to the western prairies, the Black-Eyed Susan moved east when settlers opened roads to the Midwest. It is a magnet for butterflies in the summer and songbirds will cover the plants in autumn devouring the seeds. The Black-Eyed Susan has been the official Maryland flower since 1918 when it was designated the ""Floral Emblem"" of Maryland by the General Assembly.
