In the history of the Grand Piano, there is a unique American contribution. Chickering produced the first one-piece cast iron frame in the 1840's. Three decades later Theodore Steinway understanding the strength of this metal frame increased the tension on the strings to a remarkable 44,000 lbs. This modification along with other adjustments gave the grand piano the broad tonal palette that we hear today.
