The arabesque pattern that adorns this piece is derived from a sixteenth-century compendium of designs by Peter Flötner. Flötner was a goldsmith and an important designer of ornament who was born in Switzerland but worked in Nuremburg, a great center for the production of decorative metal work in the early sixteenth century. He is credited with being one of the first artists to introduce Italian Renaissance styles of ornament to northern Europe. One type of ornament currently popular in Italy was the arabesque, a linear scheme of decorative interlace that was imported from the Islamic world as trade and communication between the Middle East and Italy increased during the sixteenth century. Flotner’s Moresques and Damasquines was instrumental in carrying the arabesque to artists and designers throughout northern Europe.
